Information about Bone Diseases

Our bones are the first to face external trauma. And yet we take them for granted unless something goes seriously amiss.

Most of us are familiar with marthritis and osteoporosis, the biggest illness that plague the bones. But there are a number of other diseases that are not usually taken very seriously. And what worse is that these diseases are increasingly making their presence felt and often lead to serious repercussions. “All bone related ailments are usually accompanied by pain. Unfortunately when the pain is mild it is ignored. But internally its tremors are felt more viciously by the bones, which if left untreated assume ugly deformities.” which is explain as follows,

Avascular Necrosis Of The Femoral Head

Indication: This is one of the most serious problems among young patients, as many of them indulge in heavy drinking, says study. Inadvertent consumption of steroids through medication or other ways may also lead to ailment, which chokes the blood vessels and there by diminishes the blood supply to the head of the femur, which is located in the hip. Left untreated, this condition can develop into arthritis.

Identification: The ailment can be identified with an X-ray and MRI scan.

Treatment: Depending on the stage of the disease, the treatment could be to drill holes in the bone, or to graft bones or under take hip replacement.

Hyperuricacidemia

Indication: This condition, commonly known as gout, goes undiagnosed to a large extent, says studies. A metabolic disorder, it can lead to bone and joint pains, muscle pain and occasionally even a renal (kidney) failure in some individuals. The uric acid levels in a patient’s blood increases, which results in deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, muscles and tendons. The risk factors are drawn from genetic and dietary habits. People consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol are prone to gout.

Treatment: It can be controlled with proper diet and meditation. “Remember, gout does not respond to normal painkillers,” says senior orthopedic surgeon.

Osteomyelitis

Indication: An infection in the bones and joints is one of the moist dangerous problems. This can happen at any stage. “The bone is honeycomb like structure with millions of holes in it. Hence, once any infection settles here, it I difficult to cure. Treatment may have to be continued for a very long time, may be years together. This condition is seen more among those whose immunity levels are low.

Identification: By X-ray and blood count.

Treatment: “The only treatment is surgical clearance of all the dead tissues and the pus from the bone, followed by ingestion of antibiotics for a very long time,” says study reports.

Osteopenia

Indication: As a woman grows older, her estrogen and progesterone levels start falling, resulting in osteopenia, or a lack of bone proteins. Left untreated, this condition may later be clubbed with osteoporosis, where the minerals from the bones are washed out, making the bones brittle. Good news is that both conditions are preventable. “A woman who remains active, physically and sexually, is usually not afflicted by this problem. Every sexual act gives an upsurge of estrogen in a woman even after she hits menopause,” says reports form journals.

Identification: Bone densitometry, a type of imaging test, is most accurate.

Treatment: Exercise programmes, calcium supplementation and hormone replacement theory.

Scoliosis

Indication: “It can happen due to either congenital reasons or it can be acquired. In the latter case, it is seen that women in their adolescence are more vulnerable to it. Whether congenital or acquired, the consequences are largely seen in terms of physical deformities, like a crooked back, shoulders not on the same level, etc. Severe cases of scoliosis due to congenital reasons can lead to paralysis of the legs due to stretching of the spinal cord. When scoliosis is acquired and associated with certain neurological conditions like polio and Frederick’s ataxia, the patient’s life span may be shortened due to respiratory problems.

Identification: By a simple X-ray.

Treatment: While braces and exercise programmes are used for milder versions of scoliosis, in severe cases, surgery is the only answer.” Depending upon the severity of the ailment, the correction is between 60-100 percent”. says experts.

Sodalities

Indication: Spondylitis is the general term for all spine related problems. “There are many versions, like cervical spondylitis (occurs in younger people) and degenerative spondylitis (affects the lower back which gets weaker with age among senior citizens),” says doctors. It affects one’s daily physical activities where one needs to kneel down a lot and can even lead to mental depression. Exercise and diet control are the best preventives measures.

Identification: An X-ray is the best preferred method.

Treatment: In the initial stages, physiotherapyand posture training is recommended. “If left untreated, it can become chronic and the only treatment in this case is surgery, especially in the case of degenerative spondylitis.” Doctors says,” 90 percent of the individuals with excessively protruding buttocks suffers from a congenital condition called spondylolysis, whereby there is defect in vertebrae since birth. This can be helped by certain exercise programmes, weight control and restricting certain movements. “If untreated, this may result in spondylolisthesis, a condition in which vertebrae slip over each other. This can be very painful and can restrict the patient’s movements”.
