Solving Pond Problems

Oxygen: Necessary For The Survival Of Ponds

Dissolved Oxygen or DO is one of the most significant parameters for monitoring a lake or a pond.

Basically, DO is the amount of oxygen present in the water of a pond. One of the good thumb rules to determine the amount of DO in a pond is measuring it in parts per million (ppm). Typically, the DO level of 4-5 ppm is the minimum requirement of most ponds.

There are various issued related to low amount of Dissolved Oxygen, some of which include:
• Number of fishes killed in the pond. This is one of the most critical issues signifying low amount of DO.
• Toxic odors due to digestion of anaerobic waste in the pond.
• Stratification is the layer of water deficient in oxygen situated at the bottom of the pond.

Factors leading to lower DO
As far as the causes that lead to low levels of oxygen are concerned, there are various factors, which contribute to lower amount of DO in the ponds. Some of these causes of low DO include:

• Abundance of aquatic plants and algae in the ponds. These consume a lot of oxygen during the night, thus leading to its shortage.
• High load of organic wastes in the pond
• Over population of fishes in the pond

If you are also concerned about these issues, then you definitely need to adopt a proper aeration system in your pond. If your pond is quite deep, 8 feet or more than that, then a diffuser system based at the bottom can be very beneficial for you. This system pushes air to the pond’s bottom and lets it bubble up to the top, thus allowing a greater mixing of water column and also eliminating stratification. In case of a shallow pond, surface aerators like fountains are a better option.

These aerators pull the water from the foot surface of the pond and let it spray out into the air. When this water gets splashed down on the pond’s surface, an exchange of oxygen is created there which helps in the aeration of few feet at the top of the pond water.

Solutions for low DO level
http://www.naturalenviro.com/sections.php?section=Aerators provides several benefits which include:
• Elimination and reduction in the number of fish kills resulting from low amount of DO.
• Stimulation of aerobic bacteria that is extremely beneficial for the pond.
• Absence of problematic nutrients from the pond that lead to growth of unwanted organisms in it.
• Reduction in the number of algae blooms resulting from the non-availability of essential nutrients.
• Improved overall quality of pond water.
• Prevention of turn-overs.
• Reduction in the odours.

A properly sized, good system of pond aeration is not available cheaply but the money required for maintenance work and alternative treatments can prove to be very high in comparison, in addition to the long-term advantages of pond aeration. It has been highly recommended to contact professional people to make sure that you have got the most appropriate system of aeration and that its size is not less than required.
