Things to know about whey protein

By: Steve Gargento

Read this article for a detailed information on whey protein and when it's best to take it.

Different scientific researches have proven that whey is the highest quality protein available on the market today. Several main factors give it the number one position when compared with egg whites, casein or soy protein. First of all, whey get more rapidly absorbed and digested by the body. It leads to increased muscular strength and performance capacity, improves blood lipid levels, immunity and blood pressure.

The bodybuilding industry is well aware of those facts, so it should come as no surprise that over 50% of all bodybuilding supplements contain it. Of course, a thing to remember is that no matter how good your supplementation might be, it's the successful combination of all components that determines what you will achieve. Besides whey protein and all the other supplemental products, bodybuilding requires hard work in the gym, consistency, 8-10 hours of sleep, and nutritious daily meals.

Timing is everything. How effective any given whey protein powder will be, for you, is often determined by when exactly you're consuming it. Experts advise that early in the morning is the best period of the day for having a whey protein shake.

It's always best to drink it in the morning, because on an empty stomach, the acids are stronger, so the whey protein will be absorbed to the fullest. It also helps your body stop the catabolic process (when your body is breaking down muscle mass to get aminos) which are the last thing that a bodybuilder wants. In that way, you will not only stop the catabolic process, but you will also speed up the recovery and growth of your muscles.

To get faster absorption, it's recommended that you mix it with water, instead of milk. The taste might not be so good, but your body won't have to deal with the aminos contained in the milk and some other components which are hard to digest. Therefore, mix up 30-50 grams of whey protein with water, as soon as you wake up.

Drinking a protein shake before and after training is for those that are having really hard times trying to gain weight. Since good bodybuilding trainings are exhausting, you need to have a max recovery. The first 40 minutes after workout are the best moment to have a whey shake.

Most whey protein powder manufacturers tend to add other supplements, besides whey in an attempt to make the end product even more effective. Often, the labels let you know exactly what these supplements are. For example, whey protein powders can have anywhere from zero to a significant number of grams of carbs per serving. Carbs give you energy when training, so they are very important.
