Words Can Boost A Blog's Affiliate Program Success

By: Jeff Alderson

You've come across a fantastic new affiliate program that promises big returns. After signing up, dropping a few referral links here and there, you kick back and wait for the cash to start rolling in.

While the above picture can reflect reality, the simple truth is it often takes a little more work to get affiliate programs to pay off well. Finding a great new affiliate program is just the first step in helping a blog owner realize a little profit for the efforts involved. Dropping links in forums, adding the referral link to the blog's home page and even e-mailing friends and family can help. There are, however, many other steps blog owners can take to increase revenue through affiliate programs. Using the written word can be one of the best ways to boost interest.

Quite a few proven methods exist that bloggers can use to pick up their earnings levels from affiliate program offerings. This can especially be the case if a program happens to be fairly new. The amount of work involved in boosting potential will depend on the route a blog publisher chooses to go.

If the affiliate program happens to be very new, you can get a leg up on the competition by writing about that program early, informatively and often. Doing this will enable your blog to get ranked on the topic early. In essence, if you play your cards right, your writing can become an authority on the topic. Write about the product or service. Create posts about the affiliate program itself. Do anything to get the right keywords in and the pages ranked. Those who strike early and effectively can easily see their pages ranked in the top portion of a search on the subject.

When you write about the topic at hand, there are a few things to keep in mind. Those who write posts that are objective, conversational and informative, tend to do much better. The idea is to become the authority. This means if others have already written a piece, do better than they did. Go for more in-depth reviews, added information and so on. Quote and link other authority sources, too. Just make sure your angle is different from what else has been done. Honesty is always a good policy, too. No one wants to read a sales piece. Include the bad with the good if bad is there.

Keywords are important to articles on affiliate programs, but they are not the be all and end all. Don't let them bog the piece down too much. Instead, focus on working the main words into the title. Put them elsewhere in the piece where they fit naturally. The posts that get read the most are those that have a clear voice, are easy to read and offer something readers need or want to know.

Should other articles be available, consider linking to those you use or particularly enjoy. When you do this, you can earn a trackback. This puts your website's link on the site you're linking to. That site's visitors can see it and click through to your site. This is particularly useful if the site linked to happens to have a lot of traffic.

Other ways for boosting affiliate income potential exist. Some site publishers create their own presell pages. These pages have their own separate URL and are used to entice and encourage visitors to click through to an affiliate. Good ones, however, do this by providing relevant information, not high-pressure sales tactics. The benefit of these pages is that they help keep a home page free from tons of affiliate links. They also are wonderful for gaining their own search rankings. This is especially so if the content is relevant and balanced.

It is also quite possible to "borrow" traffic from other sites that are writing about the same topic. Doing this requires setting up Google Alerts or another similar program to alert you when others write about the issue. Visit their forums and drop the URL to your review along with relevant comments. Not all publishers feel this method is on the up and up, however.

Boosting a blog's earning potential with affiliate programs doesn't have to rest solely on advertising or luck. When the right content is added to a blog, big things can happen.
